Father of Life
Mother of All Men |
The Nile River is the longest river
in the world, originating some 30
million years ago. The name Nile
comes from the Greek word Neilos,
meaning valley or river valley. As
the river periodically flooded the
lands in ancient Egypt, it left
behind black sediment; and, as a
result, ancient Egyptians called the
river Ar or Aur (black). The Greeks
and Egyptians gave the land its
oldest name Kem or Kemi, which
also translates into black. The
river's water, as a life artery, and
the black fertile soil along its banks
allowed for the creation of evolving
civilizations since ancient times. |
