The Painted Lady
of Nob Hill
This
little residence has changed occupants more than once, and has now
undergone a revival with golden gilding and a fanciful Queen Anne
bronze and crystal embellishment.

Color, design, and "cultural"
embellishments have long been a means of expression for all living
things; some from a need to attract, some to establish hierarchy,
others from an appreciation of creativity. The ancient Mayans,
Romans, Greeks, Egyptians, and Etruscans decorated their homes and
public buildings (inside and out) with vivid mosaics and colorful
designs in marble and paint. Waves of monotone to gaudy have
gone through trends over many years.
The Painted Ladies -
The
fading beauty of many of the
ornate Victorian houses in San Francisco that survived the
1906 earthquake and resulting fires, went through a
psychedelic revival and colorist movement in the "sixties," from
battleship gray to architectural flowering and brilliant colors.
Thus, they became known as the
"Painted Ladies."
